Spray foam insulation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering spray foam insulation
Spray foam is a specialized service that customers trust for air sealing and insulation in hard spaces. Win by showing your training, your protection plan and the thickness and coverage you achieved.
What customers ask
- Is spray foam safe for my family?
- How long do we have to stay out of the house?
- Will this stop the drafts and the moisture?
- Can you spray the attic and the crawl space together?
- Why is it more expensive than batts?
- Will the foam damage my wiring or my pipes?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the space, the moisture history, the existing insulation and the reason for the job.
- Bring the foam equipment, the protective gear, the masking supplies and the ventilation equipment the foam type needs.
- Inspect the moisture and the wiring before you quote, and write any moisture repair as a separate line.
- Quote the foam type, thickness, coverage and the protection and ventilation as separate lines.
- Measure the thickness on site and record it for the customer.
- Give a written curing and re-entry plan that tells the customer exactly when they can return.
What to put on your profile
- Photos of finished spray foam jobs with the depth and the coverage visible.
- The foam types you apply and the spaces you insulate, such as attics, rim joists and crawl spaces.
- Your applicator training and certification, listed only if you hold it.
- Your protection and ventilation process, described in plain words.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a written summary with the foam type, the thickness, the coverage and the re-entry date.
- Offer a moisture check in the space after the first wet season.
- Remind the customer to keep the vents and fixtures clear as the space is used.
Licenses and permits
Spray foam insulation is commonly done under a contractor license, and applicators often need specific training and certification. Confirm your licensing and certification requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
