Boiler repair: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering boiler repair
Boiler repair is about finding the cause of pressure, air, flow and ignition faults, since a symptom can come from any of them. Win by testing each zone and each control, then explaining the fix in terms the customer can follow.
What customers ask
- Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
- Why are my radiators cold on one floor?
- Why does the boiler bang and gurgle?
- Is the boiler safe to run until you come?
- Can you just replace the part that failed last time?
- Will this repair stop it from coming back?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the boiler's make, model and age, the fuel type, the symptoms and whether the pressure is dropping.
- Bring a gauge set, a pressure test kit, a clamp meter, a multimeter, a combustion analyzer and a bleed key, so you can test pressure, air, flow and ignition on one visit.
- Check the expansion tank and the pressure relief valve before you add any water, and record both readings.
- Test each zone and each zone valve, and write down which zones were cold and which heated after the repair.
- Quote each part and each fix on its own line, and note the warranty on each part.
- Show the customer the failed part and the pressure reading before and after the repair.
What to put on your profile
- Photos of boiler repairs with the failed part and the repaired zone labeled.
- The boiler brands and fuel types you service, including condensing and non-condensing models.
- Your combustion testing and carbon monoxide testing, listed only if you perform them.
- Your after-hours or no-heat availability, if you offer it.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a written note with the pressure and temperature readings and the air bleeding steps used.
- Offer a service visit before the heating season, to check pressure, the expansion tank and the zone controls.
- Call back after a week of heating to confirm all zones are holding temperature and the pressure is stable.
Licenses and permits
Boiler repair is commonly done under a contractor license, and gas or oil work may need its own trade license. Confirm your licensing and permit requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
