Geothermal heating installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering geothermal heating installation
Geothermal is a design-led job, and customers hire the pro who shows the loop design, the utility plan and the test results before the first hole is drilled. Win on the design and the paperwork.
What customers ask
- How big does the loop field need to be for my house?
- Can you put the loop under my yard without damaging the landscape?
- How long does the drilling or trenching take?
- Will it heat my house in the coldest weeks?
- What happens if the loop does not perform?
- Does it work with my existing ducts or radiators?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the square footage, the insulation details, the existing fuel and system, the land layout and the access for drilling or trenching.
- Run a heat load calculation and a loop design before you quote, and show the customer both.
- Schedule the underground utility locate before any digging, and note it in the plan.
- Show the pressure test and flush plan in the quote, and explain the antifreeze you will use.
- Put the landscape restoration plan in the quote with photos of similar past work.
- Give a commissioning schedule with the readings you will record for heating and cooling.
What to put on your profile
- Photos of finished loop fields, headers and indoor installs with clean, labeled piping.
- The loop types you install, vertical or horizontal, and the heat pump brands you use.
- Your loop design and pressure testing process, described in plain words.
- Your licenses and permits for the drilling or trenching work, listed only if you hold them.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a closeout packet with the loop design, the pressure test record, the heat pump model and serial numbers, and the warranty steps.
- Schedule a check after the first heating season to confirm the loop and the heat pump are performing as designed.
- Offer a maintenance plan for the indoor unit and the circulator pumps, with the schedule in writing.
Licenses and permits
Geothermal installation is commonly done under an HVAC contractor license, and drilling or trenching may require separate licensing or registration. Confirm your requirements, including refrigerant handling certification, with your state or local licensing agency before you take the job.
Questions
Will I need permits for a geothermal loop?
Loops and heat pumps are commonly permitted, and the rules vary by area. Check with the authority that issues permits where the job is located, and list the permit steps in every quote.
