Radiator repair: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering radiator repair

Radiator repair is detail work, and customers notice whether every room heats evenly after you leave. Win by fixing the cause, not just bleeding air, and by writing down each room's before-and-after condition.

What customers ask

  • Why is only one radiator cold?
  • Why does my radiator bang?
  • Can you fix this radiator without replacing it?
  • Why is one room always colder than the others?
  • Will the leak come back?
  • Do you service old cast iron radiators?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask which rooms are cold, whether the radiators bang, and whether the boiler pressure is dropping.
  • Bring a radiator key, a pressure gauge, a set of valve packing, air vents and the common replacement sections for the radiator types you service.
  • Test each radiator by feel and by temperature before you bleed it, and record which ones were cold.
  • Replace valve packing or the thermostatic head when they leak, and quote each one as a separate line.
  • Rebalance the system by setting each valve and record the setting for each room.
  • Show the customer the before-and-after temperatures for each radiator in writing.

What to put on your profile

  • Before and after photos of a repaired radiator, with the fault and the repair labeled.
  • The radiator types you service, such as cast iron sectional, panel and baseboard.
  • Your rebalancing service, listed as its own item.
  • Your plumbing or heating license status, listed only if you hold it.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send a written list of the radiator settings and the rooms that were rebalanced.
  • Call back after the first cold week to confirm each radiator is holding heat.
  • Offer a check of the boiler pressure at the next visit, since low pressure can cause cold radiators.

Licenses and permits

Radiator repair is commonly done under a plumbing or heating contractor license, and gas or piping work may need its own trade license. Confirm your licensing and permit requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
