Ductless mini split installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering ductless mini split installation

Ductless installs are won on layout and drainage, because a clean, quiet install is what the customer sees every day. Win by planning each head's location and drain path before you quote.

What customers ask

  • Which room should get which head, and how many do I need?
  • Will the lines show on the outside of the house?
  • Will the indoor unit be loud or drip on the floor?
  • How long will the install take?
  • Can one outdoor unit run several rooms?
  • What happens if the outdoor unit fails in a few years?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, get the room sizes, the number of stories, the exterior wall materials and the spots the customer wants to cool or heat.
  • Walk each room with the customer and mark head locations, line routes and drain paths before you quote.
  • Show the sightline and clearance for each head, and the route of the line set, in a simple photo or sketch.
  • Quote the electrical work, the line set, the condensate pump if needed and the wall penetration as separate lines.
  • Put the vacuum level and the refrigerant charge method in the quote, so the customer knows how the system is commissioned.
  • Leave a commissioning sheet with the operating mode settings, the filter cleaning schedule and the warranty registration.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished installs with clean line set covers, straight indoor heads and labeled outdoor disconnects.
  • The brands and capacities you install, including single-zone and multi-zone systems.
  • A short description of how you choose head locations and drain routes.
  • Your refrigerant handling certification status, listed only if you hold it.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send the commissioning sheet with the model and serial numbers, the operating settings and the filter cleaning steps.
  • Schedule a check after the first season to confirm the drain is clear and the heads are running cleanly.
  • Offer a service visit before each heating and cooling season, with a written summary of the readings.

Licenses and permits

Ductless installation is commonly done under a contractor license, and refrigerant handling commonly requires a certification. Confirm your electrical and permit requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the job.
