Boiler installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering boiler installation

Boiler installation is won by sizing from the heat loss and planning the piping, venting and controls before the first quote. Customers judge the work by how evenly the house heats, so balance the zones and document it.

What customers ask

  • What size boiler do I need, and why is it different from my old one?
  • Can you use my existing radiators and pipes?
  • Will the new boiler be inspected, and who pulls the permit?
  • How long will the heat be off during the change?
  • What warranty do I get on the boiler and on your work?
  • Will the new boiler work with my thermostat?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask for the square footage, the insulation, the number of zones, the emitter type and the fuel type.
  • Run a heat loss calculation room by room, and show it in the quote so the boiler size comes from the house.
  • Inspect the radiators or baseboards and the pipes, and quote any emitter or piping work as separate lines.
  • Show the venting route and the material in the quote, and mark where the condensate will drain on a condensing boiler.
  • Quote the low water cutoff, the expansion tank and the pressure relief valve as separate line items.
  • Give a schedule with the day the old boiler comes out and the day heat is restored, and include the zone balancing in the plan.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished installs with neat piping, labeled zone valves and clean venting.
  • The boiler brands and types you install, including condensing and non-condensing models.
  • A short description of how you do heat loss calculations and zone balancing.
  • Your permit and inspection process, so customers know how the install is verified.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send a closeout packet with the model and serial numbers, the start-up readings, the zone settings and the warranty steps.
  • Schedule the first service visit inside the warranty window and explain what it covers.
  • Check in after the first cold week to confirm every zone is heating evenly, and offer a balancing visit if one is needed.

Licenses and permits

Boiler installation is commonly done under a contractor license, and gas, oil and venting work may require their own trade licenses. Confirm your licensing and permit requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the job.

Questions

Will I need a permit and an inspection for every install?

Many boiler installs need a permit and an inspection, especially for gas, oil and venting work. Check with the authority that issues permits where you work, and show the permit line in each quote.
