Thermostat services: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering thermostat services
Thermostat work is quick to do wrong and slow to diagnose, so customers reward a pro who checks compatibility first and explains the settings. Win by naming the wires and the settings in plain words.
What customers ask
- Will this smart thermostat work with my system?
- Do I need a new wire to the thermostat?
- Why does my heat pump run the backup heat?
- Can you set it up so I can use it from my phone?
- Why is my system not turning on after the new thermostat?
- Can you add sensors for different rooms?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the make and model of the furnace or air handler and the outdoor unit, and the thermostat's current model.
- Bring a wire tester, a multimeter, a set of spare thermostat wire and the adapter kits your customers commonly need.
- Label every wire before disconnecting and photograph the existing wiring for the customer's records.
- Confirm the system type, the heat pump and stage settings and the fan options, and write each setting on the quote.
- Test heating, cooling, fan and the backup heat before you leave, and show the customer each result.
- Explain how to use the schedule, the remote access and the temperature sensors in plain words.
What to put on your profile
- Photos of finished thermostat installs with labeled wiring and clean backplates.
- The thermostat brands and models you install, and the system types you support, such as heat pump and dual fuel.
- Whether you install sensors and zoning, listed only if you do.
- Your wiring and common wire work, described in plain words.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a written note with the thermostat settings, the schedule and the wire labels.
- Offer a short check after the first week to confirm the settings suit how the home is used.
- Offer a service visit for the system, if the thermostat install uncovered a fault in the equipment.
Licenses and permits
Thermostat installation is commonly done under an HVAC technician license, and line-voltage or electrical wiring may need a licensed electrician. Confirm your licensing requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
