Air conditioning installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering air conditioning installation

Central air installation is a sizing and workmanship job, and customers judge it by how quiet, cool and even the house feels. Win by sizing from the house, showing your plan and putting the testing in writing.

What customers ask

  • What size do I need, and why is it different from my old unit?
  • Do I need new ducts or new lines?
  • How long will the install take, and will I have cooling by the end of the day?
  • What do you do about the electrical work?
  • What warranty do I get, and who handles it?
  • Which efficiency level should I choose?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, get the square footage, the number of floors, the insulation and window details, the existing duct layout and the age of the old system.
  • Run a room-by-room load calculation, show it, and explain the chosen size in plain words.
  • Bring a duct inspection with photos of leaks, crushed runs or undersized returns, and quote each fix on its own line.
  • Put the line set size and length in the quote, and say whether the lines are new or reused.
  • List the electrical work as its own section, with breaker size, wire gauge and any panel upgrade.
  • Give a day-by-day schedule showing the day the old unit comes out and the day cooling is restored.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished outdoor installs with clean line runs, level pads and labeled disconnects.
  • The brands, tonnages and efficiency levels you install.
  • A short explanation of how you size systems, including the load calculation method you use.
  • Your refrigerant handling certification status and any manufacturer training you hold, listed only if it is true.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send a closeout packet with the model and serial numbers, the start-up readings, the warranty registration steps and the thermostat setup.
  • Schedule the first tune-up before the next cooling season and explain what it covers.
  • Check in after the first hot week to confirm every room holds temperature, and offer a register balancing visit if rooms run uneven.

Licenses and permits

Air conditioning installation is commonly done under a contractor license, and refrigerant handling commonly requires a certification. Confirm your permit, inspection and electrical licensing requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the job.
