Radiant floor heating installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering radiant floor heating installation

Radiant floor installs are pressure-test and layout jobs, and the customer depends on the work being right before the floor is covered. Win by showing the layout drawing, the test records and the floor covering limits.

What customers ask

  • Will radiant heat work under my tile?
  • How long does it take to heat the floor?
  • Will the floor be too hot to walk on?
  • What happens if a mat or tube fails later?
  • Can you add it to a room that is already finished?
  • Electric or water: which one should I choose?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the room size, the floor covering plan, the subfloor or slab type, the heat source and the existing finishes.
  • Bring layout drawing software or a sketch set, a pressure test kit or a continuity meter, a thermostat and floor sensor, and the tubing or mat supplies you use.
  • Draw the layout for each zone and show it to the customer before you fasten anything.
  • Quote the mats or tubing, the manifold, the controls and the connection work as separate lines.
  • Pressure test or check continuity and record the results before the cover goes on.
  • Explain the floor temperature limit and the covering limit in plain words, so the customer knows what to expect.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished installs showing the layout, the manifold and the floor sensor.
  • The mat and tubing types you install, and the floor coverings you have worked under.
  • Your pressure testing or continuity testing process, described in plain words.
  • Your electrical or hydronic licensing, listed only if you hold it.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send the layout drawing, the test records and the thermostat settings to the customer in writing.
  • Offer a check of the controls and the floor limit after the first heating season.
  • Remind the customer where the zones and the thermostat are, so future repairs or floor work avoid the system.

Licenses and permits

Radiant floor heating installation is commonly done under a contractor license, and electric mats often need a licensed electrician while hydronic work may need a licensed plumber or HVAC contractor. Confirm your requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
