Insulation installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering insulation installation
Insulation is judged by how the house feels after the install, and by how well the air sealing and the vents hold up over time. Win by showing the air leaks you sealed and the depth you installed, with photos.
What customers ask
- How much insulation do I need?
- Will this lower my heating and cooling bills?
- Do you do the air sealing too?
- Will you cover my recessed lights?
- Is my old insulation safe to remove?
- How long does the install take?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the square footage of each space, the existing insulation type and depth, the climate and any comfort complaints.
- Bring a depth gauge, a thermal camera or blower-door readings if you use them, an air sealing kit, baffles, and rated fixture covers.
- Photograph the air leaks and the existing insulation before you start, and show the customer the depth you measured.
- Quote the air sealing, the baffles, the insulation and any test or removal as separate lines.
- Measure the depth after the install and record it for each area, so the customer can check the work.
- Explain the R-value you chose and why, in plain words, and show the customer where the vents and fixtures are.
What to put on your profile
- Before and after photos of attic and crawl space insulation, with the depth marked.
- The insulation types you install, such as batts, blown-in and rigid board.
- Your air sealing process, described in plain words.
- Your licensing or certification status for insulation work, listed only if you hold it.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a written summary with the areas covered, the depth installed and the air sealing completed.
- Offer a check of the attic hatch and the vents after the first winter, so any new gap is found early.
- Remind the customer where the recessed fixtures are, so no one covers them later.
Licenses and permits
Insulation installation is often done under a contractor license, and some areas require a license or certification for insulation work. Confirm your requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
