Indoor air quality testing: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering indoor air quality testing
Indoor air testing is a diagnosis that customers pay for because they want an answer they can trust. Win by naming the pollutants you test, showing the instruments and giving a plain report.
What customers ask
- Is my air safe?
- Can you test for radon and mold in the same visit?
- What does a reading of this level mean for my family?
- How long does the test take, and when will I get results?
- Can you tell me where the mold is coming from?
- Will you recommend a fix or only test?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask what prompted the test, who lives in the home, any symptoms, and whether there was a flood, renovation or carbon monoxide alarm.
- Bring a calibrated set of instruments for particles, humidity, carbon monoxide and radon, plus a moisture meter and a thermal camera for finding moisture.
- Walk the mechanical areas first and check the combustion appliances, the venting and the exhaust fans before you set any monitor.
- Name the lab and the sampling method for any sample you send, and list the turnaround time in the quote.
- Write the report with each reading, the normal range the lab or instrument uses, and what the reading means in plain words.
- Separate the testing from any remedy in the quote, so the customer can get a second opinion.
What to put on your profile
- Sample reports with the readings redacted, showing the format customers receive.
- The pollutants you test for, listed one by one.
- The instruments you use, with a note on how each is checked.
- Your testing service area and turnaround times.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a follow-up test after a remedy is in place, so the customer can confirm the result.
- Send a written reminder to test for radon again after a change to the foundation or the ventilation.
- Share the report with the customer's permission so they can give it to their insurer or a buyer.
Licenses and permits
Indoor air quality testing is often done by independent testers or licensed contractors, and mold or asbestos remediation may require a separate license. Confirm your licensing and any lab or certification requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
