Gas fireplace installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering gas fireplace installation
Gas fireplace installs are judged by how well the fireplace lights, how quiet the venting is and how the surround looks. Win by proving the gas line, the listing and the safety shutoffs before the customer sees the finish.
What customers ask
- Can I use my existing gas line?
- Where will the vent come out, and will it bother the neighbors?
- Can I run it with a remote or a thermostat?
- Will it light when it is cold outside?
- How long will the install take?
- What do I need to do to keep it running well?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the fireplace model, the gas type, the location, the existing gas supply and the venting you plan.
- Check the gas line size and pressure on site, and write the readings on the work order before you connect.
- Show the customer the listing for the model and explain why the vent route follows it.
- Quote the gas line, the venting, the electrical items and the surround as separate lines.
- Run the ignition and safety shutoff tests, and record each result before the surround goes on.
- Show the customer how to light, shut down and clean the glass, and leave the written steps.
What to put on your profile
- Photos of finished installs with the vent termination, the gas shutoff and the surround visible.
- The gas fireplace brands and models you install, direct vent and chimney-vented.
- Your gas line pressure testing process, described in plain words.
- Your gas licensing and permit status, listed only if you hold them.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Send a written note with the model, the listing, the gas shutoff location and the start-up test results.
- Offer a service visit after the first season to check the burner, the pilot and the venting.
- Remind the customer how to clean the glass and check the venting, with no pressure to book add-on work.
Licenses and permits
Gas fireplace installation is commonly done under a contractor license, and gas line work often requires a licensed trade and a permit. Confirm your licensing and permit requirements with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
