Fireplace repair: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering fireplace repair

Fireplace repair is a diagnosis job where the fault is often hidden in the flue or the firebox. Win by showing the inside of the fireplace with photos and testing the draft before you explain the fix.

What customers ask

  • Why is smoke coming into the room?
  • Can you fix this crack without rebuilding the firebox?
  • Is my chimney leaking into the fireplace?
  • Why won't my gas fireplace light?
  • Is it safe to use until you come?
  • How long will the repair take?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask whether the fireplace is wood or gas, the fuel, the symptoms and whether the smoke comes into the room.
  • Bring a light, a camera for the flue, a set of firebrick and refractory mortar, and a damper kit for the fireplace models you service.
  • Photograph the firebox, the damper and the flue before you repair, and show the customer the photos.
  • Quote the firebrick, the mortar, the damper, the liner and the gas parts as separate lines.
  • Test the draft after the repair, and record the result on the work order.
  • Explain in plain words what the crack or leak means and why the repair is needed.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished repairs with the firebox, the damper and the flue visible.
  • The fireplace and insert brands and types you repair, wood and gas.
  • Your chimney inspection process and camera work, listed only if you do it.
  • Your gas repair licensing, listed only if you hold it.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Send the photos and a written summary of the fault and the repair.
  • Offer a chimney cleaning and inspection before the next season, and explain what it checks.
  • Call back after the first few uses to confirm the draft is holding and no smoke enters the room.

Licenses and permits

Fireplace repair is commonly done under a contractor license, and gas parts commonly need a licensed trade. Confirm your requirements, including any permit for chimney or flue work, with your state or local licensing agency before you take the work.
