Storage services: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering storage services

Storage services are judged on clean, dry and secure units and on clear access rules. Winning these customers means matching the unit to the belongings, showing the security and climate details and keeping a written inventory.

What customers ask

  • Is the unit clean and dry
  • Is it climate controlled
  • How secure is the unit
  • Do you pick up from my home
  • What insurance covers my items
  • Can I get in on weekends

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask what is going into the unit and how long it will stay, then recommend the size and type
  • Show the unit's climate control, lock and access process, and put the details in the quote
  • Take photos and a written inventory at drop-off, and give the customer a copy
  • Quote pickup, delivery and packing as separate lines, with the time window for each
  • Explain the storage insurance in plain words and show what it covers before the customer signs
  • Confirm the notice period and the late payment terms in writing before the rental starts

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of clean, well-organized units with shelving and pallets, with the customer's permission
  • A list of unit sizes and types you offer, including climate-controlled and outdoor options
  • Your security details, such as gated access, lock rules and camera coverage if you have it
  • Your insurance options for stored items, stated plainly

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a size review after a month, in case the customer needs a smaller or larger unit
  • Suggest a check of the stored items on a schedule the customer chooses, if they want one
  • Share a short guide on preparing items for long-term storage, such as cleaning and covering them

Licenses and permits

Storage services are not commonly licensed. Check with your state or local licensing agency for business registration you need, and check any local rules that govern the use of storage space and the rules for pickup and delivery vehicles.

Questions

Can I promise that items will not be damaged in storage?

No. Describe the climate control, the security and the insurance options, and let the customer decide what coverage fits their items.

What if the customer wants to store valuables?

Discuss the coverage limits first, record the items in writing and suggest they keep original appraisals or receipts with the inventory.
