Moving services: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering moving services
Full-service moving is a trust business where customers judge you on care, honest estimates and on-time arrival. Winning these jobs means a thorough walkthrough, a written inventory and a clear valuation and claims process.
What customers ask
- How much will the move cost in total
- Are you insured and registered for this kind of move
- How do you protect my furniture and floors
- What happens if something breaks
- Will the same crew do the loading and the unloading
- Can you handle stairs and tight access
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the addresses, the number of rooms, the stairs and the parking, then book an in-home or video walkthrough
- Write an inventory at the walkthrough that lists large items, boxes and any specialty pieces, and send it with the quote
- State in the quote the crew size, the truck size, the estimated time and what can change the final amount
- Explain the valuation options in plain words and show the coverage limits in writing before the booking
- Confirm the parking plan and any permit needed at each address a week before the move
- Send a short reminder the day before with the arrival window and a note on what to have ready
What to put on your profile
- Photos of a loaded truck with furniture wrapped and secured, taken with permission from the client
- A list of the move types you do, such as local, long distance, office and specialty items
- Your registration and insurance details, shown on the profile page
- A short description of your damage claim process and how long claims typically take to settle
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a post-move check-in call to confirm that every box arrived and that nothing was missed
- Suggest packing or unpacking help as an add-on, quoted separately
- Share a short guide to updating the address and the utilities before moving day
Licenses and permits
Moving companies that carry household goods are commonly required to be registered and insured, and interstate moves commonly require federal registration. Check with your state or local licensing agency and the transport authority that covers interstate carriers before you take the work.
Questions
Should I promise a fixed price on the phone?
No. Give a range based on the inventory you have seen, and confirm the final amount in writing after a walkthrough. Explain what can change it.
What do I do when a customer disputes damage?
Use the inventory and the condition report from loading and unloading. Work through your written claim process and keep photos, so both sides can see the starting point.
