Piano moving: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering piano moving
Piano moving is judged on whether the instrument arrives in tune with no new marks and whether the route was planned well. Winning it means specialized equipment, a route survey and a clear note on tuning after the move.
What customers ask
- Will my piano be damaged in the move
- Do you have the right equipment for a grand piano
- Can you get it up the stairs
- Do you tune the piano after the move
- Are you insured for the piano itself
- Will the piano need to be disassembled
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the piano type, the brand, the route and any stairs, then book a route survey
- Measure the doorways, stairs and the floor surface at the survey, and tell the customer if a door or window must come off
- Quote piano-specific equipment and disassembly as separate lines, with the piano type stated
- Show the padding and the skid board or dolly you use, and explain how you secure the piano on the skid board and the route
- Photograph the piano before the move and note any existing marks on the form
- Set the piano in place, level it and tell the customer when a tuner should visit
What to put on your profile
- Photos of a piano being wrapped and moved with specialized equipment, with the client's permission
- A list of piano types you move, such as upright, console and grand
- Your equipment list, including skid boards, straps, ramps and stair equipment
- Your insurance certificate with piano coverage stated, and any training your crew holds
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a tuner referral after the piano has settled
- Suggest a re-leveling check on the casters or legs after a few weeks, quoted as a short visit
- Share a short guide on the room conditions a piano needs, such as steady humidity and distance from heat
Licenses and permits
Piano moving is commonly done by insured moving companies. Check with your state or local licensing agency for any registration you need, and keep your piano coverage and insurance certificate current for customers who ask.
Questions
Should I take a piano that needs a door removed?
Only if you can remove and reinstall the door safely and the customer agrees in writing. Otherwise refer it and say why.
Do I need to tell the customer when to tune?
Yes. Recommend a tuner visit once the piano has settled, usually after a few weeks, and say the tuning is a separate service.
