Appliance removal: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering appliance removal

Appliance removal is judged on clean, safe pickups and on a clear record of refrigerant recovery and disposal. Winning it means confirming the appliance list, using a certified technician for refrigerant and giving the customer proof of where each unit went.

What customers ask

  • Do you recover the refrigerant
  • Can you take out my old fridge and washer today
  • Will you disconnect the water and gas
  • Where does the appliance go
  • Do you donate working appliances
  • Will you damage my floors or doorway

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask for the appliance type, the size, the stairs and the access, then confirm the removal date
  • Name the certified technician who recovers refrigerant, and state in the quote that recovery is done before transport
  • Quote the removal, the disconnection and the recovery as separate lines
  • Protect the doorway and floor on every removal, and say so in the quote
  • Give the customer a disposal record for each appliance, with the recycling or donation site named
  • Sweep the spot and check that no part was left behind before you leave

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of an old appliance being carried out with protection on the floor, with the client's permission
  • A list of appliance types you remove, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers and ranges
  • Your certified refrigerant recovery partner, stated plainly on the service page
  • Your insurance certificate and your disposal record process

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a pickup of other old appliances the customer mentions, quoted as a separate job
  • Suggest a donation option for working units with a local charity, without taking a commission
  • Share a short note on how to prepare a fridge for removal, including emptying and thawing

Licenses and permits

Refrigerant recovery is commonly done by a certified technician, and gas and electrical disconnection are commonly licensed work. Check with your state or local licensing agency for the rules that apply to your business and to each task you perform or refer out.

Questions

Can I remove a fridge without a certified technician?

Refrigerant recovery should be done by a certified technician. If your team does not have that certification, refer that part of the job and say so in the quote.

What if the appliance is stuck in the doorway?

Stop and assess the opening. Do not force the unit through. Tell the customer the options, such as removing a door, and wait for their decision.
