Moving labor help: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering moving labor help

Moving labor help is judged on fast, careful work and helpers who show up on time and know how to lift safely. Winning this work means confirming the load, the stairs and the truck plan before you arrive.

What customers ask

  • How many helpers do I need
  • Will you load the truck properly
  • Can you move a sofa up the stairs
  • Do you bring the blankets and straps
  • Are your helpers insured
  • Can you drive the truck

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask for the load size, the number of stairs, the truck size and the start time, then confirm the number of helpers
  • Show the customer how you will load the truck, with heavy items low and secured with straps
  • Quote the helpers by the number of people and the time on site, and state what is included
  • Bring floor protection and straps as standard, and say so in the quote
  • Confirm the unloading address and the room layout before the job, so the helpers know where each item goes
  • Send a short note after the job confirming the load is complete and listing any damage

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of a loaded truck with boxes stacked and straps in place, with the client's permission
  • A list of labor services you offer, such as loading, unloading and room rearrangement
  • Your equipment list, including dollies, straps and floor protection
  • Your insurance certificate and your safety process for lifting

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a second shift for the unloading if the customer needs more room placement help
  • Suggest a rearrangement visit a few weeks after the move, for heavy furniture the customer wants to move
  • Share a short guide on lifting technique and safe carrying for the household

Licenses and permits

Moving labor help is not commonly licensed. Check with your state or local licensing agency for any business registration you need, and keep your insurance certificate current for customers who ask. Any vehicle the helpers drive has its own license rules.

Questions

Should I drive the customer's truck?

Only if you hold the license the vehicle requires and your insurance covers it. Otherwise say so in the quote and let the customer arrange the driver.

What if the customer wants us to pack the boxes too?

That is a different service. Quote packing separately, or refer it to a packing company, so the scope of the labor help stays clear.
