Rock climbing lessons: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering rock climbing lessons

You teach climbers movement, knots, belaying and safety. Your lessons work best when the harness, knot and belay checks come first, and each new skill is practiced until the student can do it without help.

What customers ask

  • Can I start climbing outdoors after one lesson?
  • Will you teach me to belay?
  • Do you provide the gear?
  • How long does it take to lead climb?
  • Do you teach children?
  • What should I wear and bring?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the student's age, climbing history and whether they want gym or outdoor climbing, then say what the first lesson will cover
  • Check the harness and tie the figure-eight with the student before they climb, every time
  • Teach footwork and body position on a low wall before you add height
  • Put lesson length, gym or crag location, gear supply and group size in the quote
  • Teach belaying with a skills test that the student must pass before they belay someone else
  • End each lesson with one movement drill and a plan for the next session

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of your lessons at the gym or the crag, with student consent, showing knot checks and belay work
  • Your belay or rope rescue certification listed by name, if you hold one
  • The levels you teach, from first-timers to lead climbers
  • The gyms and crags where you teach and the gear you provide
  • Whether you run private, semi-private or group lessons

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A movement drill sheet for the next session
  • A belay certification session for climbers who want to belay partners
  • A lead climbing lesson for climbers who are ready for it
  • An outdoor lesson for climbers moving from the gym to the crag

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach rock climbing. Keep any belay or rescue certification current, carry liability insurance if the gym or land manager requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any permit or guide rule that applies to the crag you use.

Questions

Do I need liability insurance to teach at a gym?

Many gyms and outdoor operators ask instructors to carry liability insurance before they teach on their property. Check the facility rules and keep your certificate on file.

How do I handle a student who wants to lead climb too soon?

Set out the skills a student must show before they lead, such as a clean fall and an independent belay check. Let them see where they stand against that list before the next session.
