Softball training: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering softball training
You train players in fast pitch mechanics, hitting, fielding and base running. Your sessions work best when you find the one skill that costs the player most in games, then build drills for that position.
What customers ask
- Can you help my rise ball?
- Do you train infielders and outfielders separately?
- How many sessions does a player need before tryouts?
- Can you help a player get better jumps on the bases?
- Do you train pitchers, and how do you handle their rest?
- What equipment does the player need?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the player's position, age and the skill holding them back, then say what you will work on first
- Film hitting from the side in the first session and show it back before you change the stance
- Use tee and front toss drills to show the change in contact right away
- Put session length, facility, equipment and group size in the quote
- Set rest and pitch limits in writing for pitchers, and follow the league's rules
- Give each player a home drill with a target before the next session
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your sessions in the cage, at the field or on the bases, with consent
- Your coaching certificate listed by name, if you hold one
- The positions you train, such as pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders
- The facilities where you train and the equipment you provide
- Group and individual options with session length
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A home drill list for tee work, ground balls and fly balls
- A base running session for players who want better reads and leads
- A pre-season block of sessions before tryouts or a travel season
- A video review after a game, with two fixes to work on next
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to train softball players. Keep any coaching certificate current, complete a background check if you work with children, and carry liability insurance if the facility requires it. Check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply to the facility.
Questions
Do I need insurance to train at a public field?
Many public fields and private facilities ask trainers to carry liability insurance before sessions. Check the rules and keep your certificate on file.
How do I handle a player who wants to change a swing completely?
Show the player what the current swing produces on video and explain what one change would do. Make changes one at a time so the player keeps the parts that already work.
