Pickleball lessons: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering pickleball lessons

You teach players the rules, the soft game at the kitchen line and doubles strategy. Your best lessons end with a drill the player can run with a partner and a clear target for the next session.

What customers ask

  • Can I learn the kitchen rule in one lesson?
  • Do you teach singles or only doubles?
  • What should I bring to a lesson?
  • How do I stop hitting the ball into the net?
  • Do you run group play for beginners?
  • How long until I can play in a league?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask whether the player plays singles, doubles or both, and what level they think they are, then say what you will start with
  • Walk the kitchen lines and rules on the court, not in a classroom, so the player sees the boundaries
  • Hit serves and returns first, then show the dink on a target so the player sees the difference
  • Put lesson format, length, court location and whether paddles are provided in the quote
  • Pair beginners in drills so they practice the same skill at the same time
  • End with two drills for the partner practice and a date for a recheck

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of the courts you teach on, with your group or clinic setup visible
  • Your certification listed by name, if you hold one
  • The levels you teach, such as beginner, intermediate or league prep
  • Whether you provide loaner paddles, balls or a ball machine
  • Your group clinic times, if you run them

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A written list of two drills and a target for the next session
  • A doubles positioning lesson for players ready to play together
  • A group clinic for practice with players at the same level
  • A recheck session before a player joins a league or ladder

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach pickleball. Keep any coaching certification current, carry liability insurance if the facility requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply to the courts you use.

Questions

Do I need liability insurance to teach at a park?

Many public courts and private clubs ask for proof of liability insurance before a coach can run lessons on site. Check the facility rules and keep your certificate current.

How do I help a player who wants to hit hard on every shot?

Show them the soft game with a short drill, and explain when a hard shot wins a point and when it loses one. Let the player see the difference in rallies, not only hear about it.
