Tennis lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering tennis lessons
You teach players who want better strokes, footwork and match play. Your lessons work when you explain what each drill targets and show the player how to practice it alone.
What customers ask
- Can you fix my serve in a few lessons?
- Should I take private lessons or join a group clinic?
- Do I need to be a strong player to start?
- What should I bring to the first lesson?
- Do you help players prepare for league play or tournaments?
- How do I practice when I do not have a partner?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask what the player wants to improve, such as one stroke, a league, or general fitness, and say which you would start with
- Bring spare balls and a basket so the first lesson starts with rallying, not a long talk
- Film the player's serve or forehand on the first lesson and show the clip back at the end
- Put lesson length, court terms and whether balls are included in the quote
- Give each player two wall or partner drills that match the stroke you worked on
- Group players by level and tell parents which skill their child will practice that week
What to put on your profile
- Photos of you coaching on court, showing the type of lesson
- Your coaching certification listed by name, if you hold one
- The levels you teach, from beginner to league or tournament prep
- The courts where you teach and whether you provide balls or a ball machine
- Any junior or adult group programs you run
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A video review of the player's strokes after a lesson, sent with two drills
- A match-play lesson for players ready to put their skills into points
- A recheck session before a league season or a tournament
- A group clinic for players who want to keep practicing with others at their level
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to teach tennis. Keep any coaching certification current, carry liability insurance if the club or facility requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply where you teach.
Questions
Do I need insurance to teach at a club?
Many clubs and courts ask for proof of liability insurance before a coach can teach on site. Check the facility's rules and keep a copy of your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a student who wants to enter a tournament too soon?
Be direct about what the player can do now. Build a short skills checklist with the player and any parent, and agree on a tournament date only when the checklist is met.
