Lacrosse training: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering lacrosse training
You train lacrosse players in cradling, passing, shooting and defense. Your sessions work best when you tie each drill to the player's position and build stick skill before speed.
What customers ask
- Can you help my child get better at cradling?
- Do you train goalies?
- How do I shoot better with my off hand?
- What equipment does my player need?
- How many sessions before tryouts?
- Do you train beginners?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the player's position, age and the skill that is costing them the most, then say what you will work on first
- Watch the player cradle and shoot on the first session before you change the stick work
- Start with cradling and catching at a slow pace, then add speed and pressure as the hands improve
- Put session length, field location, equipment and group size in the quote
- Tie each drill to the player's position so the work shows up in games
- Send a home wall-ball routine with a target and a date for the next session
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your sessions, with player consent, showing stick work and shooting drills
- Your coaching certificate listed by name, if you hold one
- The positions and age groups you train, including goalie work if you offer it
- The fields and facilities where you train
- Whether you train individuals, small groups or teams
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A home wall-ball and cradling routine with two drills and a target
- A goalie session for players who want position-specific work
- A pre-tryout block of sessions focused on what the team tests
- A video review of a game, with two fixes before the next game
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to train lacrosse players. Keep any coaching certificate current, complete a background check if you work with children, and carry liability insurance if the field or facility requires it. Check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply to the fields you use.
Questions
Do I need insurance to train on a public field?
Many public fields and clubs ask trainers to carry liability insurance before they run sessions. Check the field rules and keep your certificate on file.
How do I handle a player who wants to work only on shooting?
Show them that cradling and passing decide how often they get a shot. Keep a short shooting block in each session and add one stick-work drill they can see the value of.
