Rock climbing lessons: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What rock climbing lessons is

Rock climbing lessons teach movement, knots, belaying and safety, at a gym or an outdoor crag, with a harness and shoes usually supplied. People book them for a first climb, to learn to belay a partner, or to move from top-rope climbing to lead climbing.

Signs you need it

  • You climb with your arms and cannot move your feet well
  • You cannot tie a figure-eight follow-through or check your harness on your own
  • You have climbed with friends but never learned to belay a partner safely
  • You want to lead climb or climb outdoors and need to learn the safety systems
  • You are stuck on the same grade and need technique more than strength

What the pro does

  • Checks your harness, knot and belay setup before you climb, and walks through each step
  • Teaches footwork, body position and how to use your legs to move up the wall
  • Teaches the figure-eight knot and how to tie in and check the system
  • Teaches belaying with a device, including the commands and the brake hand
  • Covers outdoor safety, such as anchors, rope care and what to do if a climber falls

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Private or group lesson, and the number of students per instructor
  • Gym or outdoor crag, and whether the lesson includes the wall fee
  • Whether the lesson is for first-time climbers, belay certification or lead climbing
  • Length of the lesson and the number of lessons in a series
  • Whether harness, shoes and belay device are provided
  • The instructor's experience with the terrain you plan to climb

What a written quote should spell out

  • Number of lessons, length of each and the start time
  • Gym or crag location and whether wall or access fees are included
  • Whether harness, shoes and belay device are provided
  • Group size and the instructor-to-student ratio
  • Whether a belay test or skills check is included

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Will I learn to tie in and check my own harness before I climb?
  • How do you teach belaying, and do I have to pass a skills test before I belay a partner?
  • What knots will you teach, and how do you check that I tie them correctly?
  • Do you hold a certification in belaying or rope rescue from a climbing program?
  • What equipment do you provide, and how do you check it before each session?
  • Do you teach outdoor climbing, and what is your plan for weather and rock conditions?
  • Do you teach children, and what supervision rules do you follow?

Red flags

  • Skips the harness and knot check before climbing
  • Lets a student belay without a clear skills test and supervision
  • Uses worn or damaged equipment without checking it
  • Promises you will lead climb after a few sessions without checking your skills

What you can do yourself

You can build grip strength and balance at a climbing gym on bouldering problems close to the ground, after the gym's orientation. Practice tying knots at home with a rope and watch videos of belay technique, but never trust a knot or a belay you have not checked in person. Hire an instructor for belay training, for knot checks, for outdoor climbing and for any lead climbing.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach rock climbing. Ask whether the instructor holds a certification from a climbing instruction program and whether the gym or guide service requires insurance. Check with your state or local licensing agency only if the land or crag you climb on requires a permit or guide license.

Rock climbing lessons questions

Do I need to be strong to start climbing?

No. Climbing rewards footwork and balance as much as strength. A good instructor will teach you to use your legs and body position so you can climb more efficiently.

Do I need my own shoes and harness?

Most gyms and instructors provide them for a first lesson. Ask the instructor which shoes and harness fit your feet and body before you buy.

Can children learn to climb?

Yes, many gyms teach children. Ask about the instructor's supervision, the ratio of students to instructors and whether instructors pass a background check before they work with minors.
