Badminton lessons: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What badminton lessons is
Badminton lessons teach grip, footwork, clears, smashes and strategy, for singles or doubles play. Players book them when they are starting out, when they want to join a club or league, or when their rallies keep ending on the same weak shot.
Signs you need it
- Your clears fall short and your opponent smashes them back at you
- Your footwork is slow, so you cannot get to the shuttle in time
- Your net shots are high or flat and give your opponent an easy attack
- In doubles, you and your partner keep colliding or leaving gaps
- You are joining a club or league and want to improve before the first match
What the pro does
- Checks your grip and stance and the basic shots you already hit
- Teaches the clear, drop and smash with a focus on the swing path and contact point
- Works on footwork and recovery steps, with drills that move you around the court
- Teaches net play and the drops and pushes that set up attacks
- Covers singles or doubles strategy, including court positioning and when to attack
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Private, semi-private or group lesson
- Singles or doubles focus
- Length of the lesson and whether you book a series
- Court location and whether court time is included
- Whether shuttlecocks and loaner rackets are provided
- Your starting level, since learning footwork takes more time for new players
What a written quote should spell out
- Number of lessons and the length of each
- Court location and whether court time is included
- Whether shuttlecocks and rackets are provided
- Group size and whether the lesson is private
- Make-up policy for missed lessons and facility closures
Questions to ask before you hire
- What do you look at first in my grip, stance and clear?
- Do you teach singles, doubles or both, and how do you pick?
- How do you teach footwork so I can recover after every shot?
- Will you give me drills to practice alone against a wall or with a partner?
- How do you handle a player who keeps smashing and never moves?
- Are you certified by a badminton coaching program?
Red flags
- Teaches only smashing and skips footwork and net play
- Says you can enter a tournament after a few lessons without checking your skills
- Pushes you to buy a premium racket before you have had a lesson
- Keeps you rallying in one place with no feedback
What you can do yourself
You can practice clears and drops against a wall, shadow footwork at home, and practice grip changes with a racket on a table. A friend can feed shuttlecocks for a half-court rally. Hire a coach when a shot keeps going out or into the net, when footwork holds you back, or when you want to build doubles strategy.
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach badminton. Ask whether the coach holds a certification from a badminton coaching program and whether the facility requires insurance. Check with your state or local licensing agency only if a facility has rules that affect lesson sessions.
Badminton lessons questions
Can I learn badminton as an adult beginner?
Yes. Adults start with grip, serve and clears, then move to footwork and rallies. Group lessons with players at your level are a good place to start.
Do I need to buy a racket before a lesson?
Many facilities loan rackets for a first lesson. Once you know how you play, ask the coach about weight and grip size before you buy.
Are lessons different for singles and doubles?
Yes. Singles focuses on covering the whole court, while doubles focuses on positioning and calls with a partner. Many players start with singles to build footwork, then move to doubles strategy.
If my child takes badminton lessons, has the coach passed a background check?
Many clubs and junior programs ask for one, and you can ask to see proof before the first lesson.
