Mobile mechanic: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering mobile mechanic
You diagnose and repair vehicles at the customer's address, so your value is a clear diagnosis and arriving with the right tools and parts. Customers choose you for convenience, so show them you can handle the job without a shop.
What customers ask
- Can you fix this in my driveway?
- Do you bring the parts, or do I need to buy them?
- How long will the visit take?
- Do you need a clear space, a lift or power from my house?
- What happens if you find something else during the visit?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the year, make, model and mileage, whether a warning light is on, and what the car is doing when the problem happens
- Tell the customer which jobs you can finish at their address and which need a shop, so they trust your answer
- Keep a short list of common parts for the vehicles you service and say in the quote which ones are on your van
- Quote the diagnosis separately from the repair so the customer can approve the next step
- Send the test readings or code results with the quote so the customer sees why each item is listed
- Confirm the parking spot, access and power needs the day before the visit
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your van or setup at a driveway job, with clear space around the vehicle
- The makes and models you service most often
- Your service area and how far you travel from your base
- Your training and insurance details for the work you take
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Remind the customer of the next service interval based on the mileage recorded at the visit
- Offer to recheck an intermittent fault by phone after a few days of driving
- Send a written record of what was done and what to watch for
Licenses and permits
Check state and local rules before doing paid repair work at a customer's home, including any business registration that applies where you work. Keep your insurance current and your training records ready to show customers.
Questions
Do customers expect a shop-level warranty?
Customers often ask. Put the warranty length and what it covers on every invoice so there is no confusion later.
What do I do when a job cannot be finished in a driveway?
Tell the customer before you start, quote the shop work separately and offer to help move the car to a shop if they agree.
