Mobile mechanic: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What mobile mechanic is

A mobile mechanic comes to your home or workplace and handles diagnosis, maintenance and many repairs in your driveway or parking spot. It saves you a trip to a shop for jobs that do not need a vehicle lift.

Signs you need it

  • A warning light is on and you would rather have the car checked where it sits
  • Routine service such as oil, filters or the battery is due and the car is hard to get to a shop
  • The car will not start in the driveway or cannot be driven safely to a shop
  • You have several vehicles that need work on the same day
  • A shop quoted a large job and you want a second opinion at your own address

What the pro does

  • Reads trouble codes and checks the battery and charging system in your driveway
  • Confirms the fault with a test drive or specific tests before quoting repairs
  • Brings the parts most likely to be needed, or orders them before the visit
  • Performs the work with tools that fit a driveway, and uses jack stands rather than a jack alone when a car is raised
  • Clears codes, resets service reminders and gives you a written list of what was done and what needs attention later

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Whether the job can be done outdoors without a vehicle lift
  • Whether the parts must be ordered in or are already on the mechanic's van
  • Travel distance from the mechanic's base to your address
  • Whether the vehicle is a common model or needs specialty tools
  • How long the diagnosis takes before any repair starts
  • Whether a second visit is needed to finish the job or wait for parts

What a written quote should spell out

  • The exact fault or service and the test used to confirm it
  • Each part with its brand or grade, and whether it is new, remanufactured or used
  • Labor for each task, listed separately from parts
  • Any travel or site fee, and whether it still applies if you decline the work
  • What happens if the diagnosis finds a different problem

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Can this repair be done in my driveway, and do you have the tools for it on the day?
  • Will you tell me the cause before you replace any part?
  • Do you bring the parts, and what happens if you need a second trip?
  • Is the repair warranted, and for how long, in writing?
  • What do you need from me before you arrive, such as keys, a clear parking spot or the service history?
  • Are you insured to work on my vehicle at my address?

Red flags

  • Asks for full payment before the diagnosis is finished
  • Wants to replace parts before explaining what failed
  • Cannot say what tools or lift they will need at your address
  • Refuses to show proof of insurance for work on your property

What you can do yourself

You can check the battery terminals for corrosion, note when any warning light comes on, and gather the service records before the visit. Do not work under a car held up only by a jack. Call a pro for anything involving the brakes, fuel system or airbags.

Licenses and permits

A license is usually not required for mobile mechanic work. Auto repair rules differ by state and city, so check with your state or local licensing agency and ask the mechanic to show any registration or training records.

Mobile mechanic questions

Can a mobile mechanic do everything a shop can do?

No. Jobs that need a vehicle lift, alignment equipment or large parts usually go to a shop. A good mobile mechanic will tell you when that applies before the work starts.

Will the mechanic explain the problem before doing the work?

They should. Ask for the diagnosis and the cause in writing, and approve any repair before it is started.

Do I need to be home during the visit?

Usually you or another adult should be there to approve work, give access to the car and hand over the keys.
