Tire installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering tire installation
You mount, balance and set new tires, so customers expect the correct size and a smooth ride after the install. A correct fit and careful torque work bring people back for the next set.
What customers ask
- What size tire does my car need?
- Do I need to replace all four?
- Why does the car still vibrate after the new tires?
- How long will the tires last?
- Do you take away my old tires?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the year, make, model and tire size on the placard, and whether the car has tire pressure sensors
- Confirm the load index and speed rating before you order the tires
- Show the customer the old tire tread depths and the wear pattern, to explain the need
- Balance every wheel and note the weights used on the invoice
- Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern and recheck after the first drive, then tell the customer to return for it
- Explain the tread warranty and what the customer must do to keep it valid
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your mounting and balancing equipment in use
- Tire brands and sizes you stock or can source quickly
- Your tread warranty terms written out
- Your recycling practice for old tires
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Remind the customer of a rotation and balance check at the mileage interval in the manual
- Offer a pressure and tread check before long trips or seasonal changes
- Send a note when the tire is near the wear limit
Licenses and permits
Tire installation is usually not licensed. Check state and local rules for business registration and used tire disposal, and keep your insurance current.
Questions
What if a customer wants a size that is not on the placard?
Explain the risk of a different size, check the load and speed ratings with the car maker's data, and write the customer's choice on the invoice.
How do I handle a tire sensor that is failing?
Test the sensor and show the customer the reading. Quote the sensor separately so they can approve or decline it.
