Car repair: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering car repair

You diagnose and repair the fault in a customer's vehicle, so your value is an accurate diagnosis and an honest repair plan. Customers come to you after a warning light, noise or drivability problem has not been solved elsewhere.

What customers ask

  • What is actually wrong with my car, and how sure are you of the cause?
  • Can you repair it today, or do you need to order parts?
  • Why is this item on the estimate?
  • Will this repair stop the warning light for good?
  • What warranty do you give on this work?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, collect the year, make, model and mileage, plus the exact symptoms and when they happen
  • Explain the diagnostic test and whether it is charged separately before you run it
  • Show the test readings or code results in the estimate so each repair has a visible reason
  • List each part with its grade and whether it is new, remanufactured or used
  • Mark which repairs are for safety and which can wait, in writing
  • Send a photo of the failed part to the customer when it is removed, if they want to see it

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of your diagnostic equipment and a clean service bay
  • The makes and models you repair most often
  • Your warranty terms for parts and labor, written out
  • Your technician training and insurance details for the work you take

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Remind the customer of the next recommended service based on the mileage recorded at the visit
  • Offer a short recheck after a few days of driving if the fault was intermittent
  • Send a summary of the repair and parts used so the customer keeps a record

Licenses and permits

Shop registration and technician rules vary by state and city. Check with your state or local licensing agency before you open or take paid repair work, and keep your registrations and insurance current.

Questions

What if a customer declines the repair after the diagnosis?

Charge the diagnostic work you agreed to in advance, and give the customer a written record of the findings so they can decide later.

How do I handle a warranty return on my own repair?

Keep the warranty terms and parts records, and call the customer back to recheck the fault if it returns.
