Car diagnostics: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering car diagnostics
You read codes, test systems and find the root cause of a warning light or drivability problem. Customers trust diagnostic work when your tests are clear and your findings are shown, not just stated.
What customers ask
- What is the code, and what does it actually mean?
- Why does the diagnosis cost what it does?
- Can you tell me the cause before I approve any repair?
- Will the light come back after the repair?
- Is the car safe to drive while I wait?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the codes if the customer has them, the symptoms, and the conditions when the problem happens
- Explain your diagnostic process and its charge before you start
- Show the live data or test readings to the customer, not only the code
- Write the test results and the likely cause on the estimate
- Tell the customer whether the car is safe to drive or should be towed
- Retest after the repair and send the customer the results
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your scan tools and diagnostic equipment in use
- A short list of the systems you diagnose most often
- Your diagnostic process written out in plain words
- Your training and certifications listed by name
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a retest in a few days if the fault was intermittent
- Remind the customer to bring the car back if the light returns
- Send the diagnostic report with the repair record so the customer keeps it
Licenses and permits
Diagnostic work is usually not licensed. Check state and local rules for shop registration, and keep your insurance current and training records ready to show.
Questions
What if the customer does not approve the repair?
Charge the diagnostic work you agreed to, and give a written record of the findings so the customer can decide later.
How do I explain a code that can have several causes?
List the likely causes in order of probability, show the test that rules each one in or out, and let the customer see the result.
