Taekwondo lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering taekwondo lessons
You teach taekwondo kicks, forms and sparring with a clear belt system. Your classes work best when balance and kicking form come first, then forms and sparring build from there.
What customers ask
- How long until my child earns the first belt?
- Do you teach adults and children together?
- What uniform and gear do I need?
- Do you teach sparring?
- How much do belt tests add up to?
- Can I try a class before I sign up?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the student's age, goals and any past training, then say which class and level would suit them
- Offer a trial class so the student can see the style and the instructor before they commit
- Check each student's stance and balance in the first class before you teach a high kick
- Put class length, uniform and gear costs, belt testing fees and cancellation terms in the quote
- Publish belt requirements in writing so students and families know what each test covers
- End each class with a form section and a home drill, and a clear note for the next class
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your classes, with student consent, showing kicks, forms and belt tests
- Your taekwondo rank and the association that issued it, listed by name
- The age groups and belt levels you teach
- The school's class schedule, uniform and gear requirements and testing dates
- Whether you run children's classes, adult classes or both
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A home drill sheet for stances and kicks with a target for the next class
- A private lesson for students who want to work on one kick or one form
- A belt test prep session before a rank test
- A recheck for students returning from a break
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to teach taekwondo. Keep your rank or certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, carry liability insurance if the school requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any child care or facility rules that apply.
Questions
Do I need liability insurance to teach?
Many schools and gyms ask instructors to carry liability insurance before they teach. Check the school's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a student who wants to spar before they are ready?
Show them the kicks and the control they need first, and explain the gear and the rules for sparring. Agree on a date only when those are in place.
