Sailing lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering sailing lessons
You teach sailors boat handling, wind awareness, knots and safety. Your lessons work best when you start in light wind on a safe water body, teach capsize recovery early and build each skill before you add wind or distance.
What customers ask
- Can I sail after one lesson?
- Do you supply the boat and life jackets?
- How do I learn to read the wind?
- Do you teach children?
- What should I wear?
- Can you help me get my own boat?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the student's experience, swimming ability and goals, then say what the first lesson will cover and where
- Brief the student on the life jacket, the safety gear and the boat's rules before the boat leaves the dock
- Start in light wind and calm water, and teach wind awareness from the tiller before you add speed
- Put lesson length, boat type, life jacket and gear supply, marina terms and group size in the quote
- Teach capsize recovery in the first or second lesson, so the student knows what to do if the boat tips
- End each lesson with a knot drill and a note on the wind you saw on the water
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your lessons on the water, with student consent, showing boat handling and the safety gear
- Your sailing instruction certification listed by name, if you hold one
- The boats you teach on, sizes and types
- The marinas, lakes or bays where you teach
- Whether you run private, semi-private or group lessons
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A knot practice sheet with a target for the next session
- A tacking and jibing lesson for sailors who want more control
- A crew day for students who want to practice with others
- A recheck before a sailing trip or a charter
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to teach sailing lessons. Boats that carry paying passengers, and boats used for commercial charter, often need the captain to hold a government-issued license. Keep your credentials current, carry liability insurance if the marina requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for the rules that apply to your boats and waters.
Questions
Do I need liability insurance to teach sailing?
Many marinas and clubs ask instructors to carry liability insurance before they teach on the water. Check the marina's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a student who wants to sail in strong wind too soon?
Show them the wind speed and the boat's limits. Agree on a set of conditions for the next session, and let them see what the boat does in light wind before you add more.
