Muay thai lessons: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering muay thai lessons

You teach Muay Thai strikes, the clinch and conditioning using pads and bags. Your classes work best when stance, footwork and the basic strikes come first, and sparring is added only once the student has control.

What customers ask

  • Can I learn to kick hard in a few classes?
  • Do I need gloves and shin guards?
  • Will I spar on day one?
  • Do you have a fight team?
  • Do you teach children?
  • Can I try a class first?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the student's age, goals and any past training, then say which class and level would suit them
  • Offer a trial class so the student can see the gym and the trainer before they commit
  • Teach stance and footwork in the first class, and check each student's shin and hip alignment on the kicks
  • Put class length, gear requirements, fight team fees and cancellation terms in the quote
  • Set the sparring rule in writing and tell students what gear they must wear
  • End each class with a pad or bag drill to repeat at home and a clear next step

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of your classes, with student consent, showing pad work, bag work and clinch drills
  • Your Muay Thai certification or rank and the gym or association that issued it, listed by name
  • The age groups and levels you teach, including beginner and fight team
  • The gym's schedule and the gear required
  • Whether you run children's classes, adult classes or fight team training

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A home conditioning and shadow boxing sheet with a target for the next class
  • A private pad session for students who want to work on one strike
  • A competition prep block for students entering an amateur event
  • A recheck for students returning from a break

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach Muay Thai. Keep your certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, carry liability insurance if the gym requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any rules that apply to combat sports or to the facility.

Questions

Do I need liability insurance to coach at a gym?

Many gyms ask coaches to carry liability insurance before they teach. Check the gym's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.

How do I handle a student who wants to spar before they are ready?

Show them the strikes and control they still need, and set the gear rules in writing. Agree on a sparring date only when those are in place.
