Kickboxing lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering kickboxing lessons
You coach kickboxers in punches, kicks and combinations on bags and pads. Your classes work best when balance and stance come first, then combinations are built on pad work before any partner or sparring work.
What customers ask
- Can I learn to kick in a few classes?
- Do I need shin guards?
- When will I spar?
- Do you train amateur fighters?
- Do you teach children?
- Can I try a class first?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the student's age, goals and any past training, then say what the first class will cover
- Start the first class with stance and balance on the kicks, and check each student's standing leg
- Teach one kick at a time on pads, and let the student see the target before they throw it
- Put class length, gear requirements, amateur fees and cancellation terms in the quote
- Set the partner work rule and gear list in writing before the first partner drill
- End each class with a combination to practice at home and a clear next step
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your classes, with student consent, showing pad work, bag work and kick drills
- Your kickboxing certification or coaching credential listed by name, if you hold one
- The levels you teach, from fitness to amateur competition
- The gym's schedule, gear requirements and partner work rules
- Whether you run children's classes, fitness classes or amateur training
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A home kick balance and combination sheet with a target for the next class
- A private pad session for a student who wants to work on one kick
- A bout prep block for students entering an amateur event
- A recheck for students returning from a break
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach kickboxing. Keep your coaching certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, carry liability insurance if the gym requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any rules that apply to combat sports or to the facility.
Questions
Do I need liability insurance to coach at a gym?
Many gyms ask coaches to carry liability insurance before they teach. Check the gym's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a student who kicks too hard in partner work?
Stop the drill, remind the student of the control rule, and slow the kick down until the partner is comfortable. Adjust the drill so the student learns control before power.
