Kayaking lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering kayaking lessons
You teach paddlers strokes, steering, safe entry and rescue skills. Your lessons work best when the student is comfortable in the boat and the water before you teach capsize and rescue, and you match the water to the student's level.
What customers ask
- Can I learn to kayak in one lesson?
- Do you supply the kayak and gear?
- Can you teach me to roll?
- Do you teach moving water?
- Can children take lessons?
- What should I wear?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the student's swimming ability, comfort in the water and their goals, then say what the first lesson will cover
- Check the life jacket and kayak fit on the shore before the student enters the water
- Teach the stroke and steering in calm, sheltered water, and add the next skill only when the student is ready
- Put lesson length, water location, gear supply, life jacket and group size in the quote
- Teach the wet exit and self-rescue before the student paddles in any current
- End each lesson with one stroke drill to practice and a plan for the next water
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your lessons on the water, with student consent, showing strokes and rescue practice
- Your paddle instruction or rescue certification listed by name, if you hold one
- The water types you teach on, from lakes to rivers
- The gear you provide, such as kayaks, paddles and life jackets
- Whether you run private, semi-private or group lessons
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A stroke practice sheet with a target for the next session
- A rescue session for paddlers who want more confidence after a capsize
- A moving water lesson for paddlers ready for a river
- A recheck before a longer trip or a group paddle
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to teach kayaking. Keep any instruction or rescue certification current, carry liability insurance if the school or launch site requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any permit or access rule that applies to the water you use.
Questions
Do I need liability insurance to teach on public water?
Many schools and launch sites ask instructors to carry liability insurance. Check the rules for each water and keep your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a student who wants to paddle moving water too soon?
Set out the rescue and current skills they need first, and let them practice those in calm water. Agree on the next step together once they can show each skill on their own.
