Dancers for events: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering dancers for events
You offer dance performances for galas, parties and corporate events. This guide covers what customers ask, how to win the booking and what to show on your profile.
What customers ask
- Which dance styles do you perform?
- Can you choreograph a routine to our song?
- Do you need a floor or a mat?
- How many dancers will come, and can I see a video?
- Can you join guests on the floor?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask about the event program, the style of dance, the timing of the moment, the venue floor and the audience before you talk about the booking
- Send a video of a routine at a formal event, labeled with the style and the setting
- Put the dancer count, the routines, the music plan, the floor needs and the costume in the written quote
- Share a sample set of styles and routine lengths, so the customer can choose the moment
- Confirm the floor, stage size and music system with the venue before the event
- Ask for the song and the timing of the moment at least two weeks before the event
- Name your backup plan and confirm the dancer lineup in writing
What to put on your profile
- Videos of routines at galas, parties and corporate events, labeled by style
- Photos of the dancers in costume and in performance
- A list of the dance styles and event types you cover
- Your insurance status and the venue types where you have performed
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a short guest invitation moment as an optional add-on
- Suggest a second routine for a longer program so the crowd gets another moment
- Recommend a floor check with the venue before the event
Licenses and permits
No state license is usually required for event dance. Carry general liability insurance, any local business license that applies and a written note of the venue's floor and music rules, and check state and local requirements with your licensing agency before taking jobs.
Questions
Do I need music licensing for a routine?
Venues often hold public performance licensing for recorded music. Ask each venue what it covers and note the answer in the contract.
How do I protect dancers on a hard or slick floor?
Check the floor before the event, ask for a mat or a sprung surface if needed and warm up the dancers on the same kind of floor.
What if the program timing changes?
Agree on a cue and a short version of the routine before the event. Confirm any change to the timing in writing with the host.
