Rock band: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering rock band

You offer rock band performances for bars, festivals, parties and private events. This guide covers what customers ask, how to win the booking and what to show on your profile.

What customers ask

  • What eras of rock do you play, and can you play modern songs too?
  • How loud will you play, and what do you do about neighbors?
  • How many sets will you play, and when are the breaks?
  • Do you bring drums and amplifiers, and what power do you need?
  • Can I see a video of a full set in a venue like mine?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask about the venue type, the closing time, the noise limits and the must-play songs before you talk about the set list
  • Send a video of a full set in a real venue with the lineup shown, labeled with the event type
  • Put the set count, set length, break times and the equipment list in the written quote
  • Share a sample set list with an opening, a peak and a closing, so the customer sees the shape of the night
  • Confirm the stage space, power source and load-in route with the venue before the event
  • State your maximum volume and the sound plan in writing, and agree on it with the venue
  • Name the backup plan for a musician or instrument failure, and confirm the lineup before the date

What to put on your profile

  • Videos of full sets in bars, venues and festivals with the lineup shown
  • Photos of your stage, drums and sound setup at real events
  • A list of the rock eras and styles you play best
  • Your insurance status and the venue types where you have performed

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a set list review two weeks before the event so the customer can add or drop songs
  • Suggest a sound check time with the venue to set the volume before guests arrive
  • Recommend a request policy in writing, so the host and the crowd know how requests are handled

Licenses and permits

No state license is usually required for rock band work. Carry general liability insurance, any local business license that applies and a written note of the venue's noise and closing rules, and check state and local requirements with your licensing agency before taking jobs.

Questions

Who handles music licensing for covers in a bar?

Venues often hold public performance licensing for recorded music. Ask each venue what it covers and what the band is responsible for, and note the answer in the contract.

How do I handle a noise complaint?

Agree on the volume limit with the venue before the event. Ask the venue to tell you about any complaint during the set, and lower the volume when asked.

What if a venue asks for a shorter set?

Adjust the set list and confirm the new end time in writing. Plan the closing songs first so the ending still lands well.
