Violinist: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering violinist

You offer live violin performances for weddings, dinners and private events, solo or with other musicians. This guide covers what customers ask, how to win the booking and what to show on your profile.

What customers ask

  • Can you play a processional and a ceremony piece?
  • Do you play solo, or can you bring a pianist or other players?
  • Can I choose the pieces, and do you need sheet music?
  • Do you bring amplification for a large room or an outdoor space?
  • Can I hear a recording from a live event?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask about the event type, the moments that need music, the room size and whether the customer wants solo or group music
  • Send a recording of you playing live at a wedding or dinner, labeled with the setting
  • Put the solo or group format, the pieces for each moment and the equipment in the written quote
  • Share a sample repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces so the customer can choose
  • Confirm the room acoustics, the power source and the setup space with the venue before the event
  • Ask for the piece list at least two weeks ahead, and confirm any sheet music or arrangement needs
  • Say who you would send as a substitute violinist if you are ill, and share your ceremony music list so a substitute can prepare

What to put on your profile

  • Recordings of live performances, labeled by setting and format
  • Photos of you performing at events with the violin visible
  • A sample repertoire for weddings and dinners, with the moments listed
  • Your insurance status and the venue types where you have played

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a piece review call to confirm tempos, keys and the order of each piece
  • Suggest a short sound check with the venue or the planner before guests arrive
  • Recommend a featured piece for a special moment, with the timing agreed in advance

Licenses and permits

No state license is usually required for violin work. Carry general liability insurance, any local business license that applies and a written note of the venue's noise rules, and check state and local requirements with your licensing agency before taking jobs.

Questions

Do I need music licensing for pieces I play live?

Venues often hold public performance licensing for recorded music. Ask each venue what it covers and what you are responsible for, and note the answer in the contract.

How do I handle a room with a lot of echo?

Ask the venue for a short walk-through or a test before the event. Adjust your position and volume, and consider amplification if the room needs it.

What should I ask the customer before taking a booking?

Ask for the moments that need music, the room size, the ceremony timing and whether the customer wants a featured solo.
