Cheerleading coaching: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering cheerleading coaching

You coach cheerleaders in stunts, tumbling, jumps and routines. Your team works best when every stunt and tumbling pass has a clear progression, a clear spotting plan and a clear role for each athlete.

What customers ask

  • When will my child be ready for a flyer role?
  • Do you coach tumbling?
  • How do you keep the stunts safe?
  • What should my child wear and bring?
  • Do you run competition teams?
  • How do I know my child is making progress?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the athlete's age, level and skills, then say what the first practice will assess
  • Assess each athlete's jumps, tumbling and stunt skills and share the result with the parent
  • Break each stunt into steps and show the parent the progression before the athlete takes the role
  • Put practice length, facility location, team size and uniform or fee terms in the quote
  • Explain your spotting and mat rules before the first stunt practice
  • Send a short progress note after each practice with one skill and the next step

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of your practices, with consent, showing stunt progressions and spotting setup
  • Your coaching certification and any safety training listed by name
  • The age groups and levels you coach, from recreational to competitive
  • The facilities and mats you use
  • Whether you run recreational teams, private lessons or competition teams

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A progress note with the next skill and the steps to reach it
  • A tumbling clinic for athletes working on one pass
  • A competition prep block before an event
  • A recheck session for athletes returning from a break

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to coach cheerleading. Keep any coaching certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, and carry liability insurance if the gym or school requires it. Check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply to the facility and any child care rules.

Questions

Do I need liability insurance to coach at a gym?

Many gyms and schools ask coaches to carry liability insurance and to pass background checks before they teach. Check the facility rules and keep your certificate and check on file.

How do I handle an athlete who wants to fly before they are ready?

Show the progression steps the athlete still needs, and let them see each step done well. Set a clear date for the role only when the progressions are in place.
