Boxing lessons: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering boxing lessons

You coach boxers in stance, footwork, punches and defense. Your sessions work best when footwork and the guard come first, then combinations and defense are built on bag and pad work before any sparring.

What customers ask

  • Can I learn to box in a few sessions?
  • Do I need gloves and headgear?
  • When do I start sparring?
  • Do you train amateur boxers?
  • Do you teach children?
  • Can I try a session first?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the boxer's age, goals and any past training, then say what the first session will cover
  • Start the first session with stance and footwork, and check the guard before the first punch
  • Teach the jab and the cross with a focus on the hips, and use a mitt so the student sees the target
  • Put session length, gear requirements, amateur fees and cancellation terms in the quote
  • Set the sparring rule and the gear list in writing before any partner work
  • End each session with a combination to practice at home and a clear next step

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of your sessions, with student consent, showing bag work, pad work and footwork drills
  • Your boxing certification or coaching credential listed by name, if you hold one
  • The levels you train, from fitness to amateur competition
  • The gym's schedule, gear requirements and sparring rules
  • Whether you run children's classes, fitness classes or amateur training

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A home shadow boxing and footwork sheet with a target for the next session
  • A private pad session for a student who wants to work on one combination
  • A bout prep block for students entering an amateur event
  • A recheck for students returning from a break

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to coach boxing. Keep your coaching certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, carry liability insurance if the gym requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any rules that apply to combat sports or to the facility.

Questions

Do I need liability insurance to coach at a gym?

Many gyms ask coaches to carry liability insurance before they teach. Check the gym's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.

How do I handle a student who wants to spar on the first day?

Show them the guard and the footwork they need first, and set the gear rules in writing. Agree on a sparring date only when those skills are reliable.
