Bowling lessons: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering bowling lessons
You coach bowlers in approach, release, aim and spare shooting. Your lessons work best when you fix the approach first, then match the ball and the release so the player can repeat the shot.
What customers ask
- Can you fix my drift in one lesson?
- Do you fit balls?
- Do you teach spares?
- Do you teach children?
- Do I need my own shoes?
- How long until my scores improve?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the bowler's usual score, the type of games they bowl and their goals, then say what you will look at first
- Watch the bowler's approach and release on the first lesson and show them the video from behind
- Fix one thing at a time, starting with the starting spot and the approach, before you change the release
- Put lesson length, lane fees, ball fitting terms and cancellation terms in the quote
- Teach the spare the bowler misses most, with the angles and the target points for that spare
- End each lesson with a practice plan for the lanes and a recheck date
What to put on your profile
- Photos of your lessons at the lanes, with student consent, showing approach, release and spare work
- Your bowling coaching certification listed by name, if you hold one
- The levels you teach, from beginners to league bowlers
- The bowling centers where you teach, and whether you provide house balls or fittings
- Whether you run private lessons, clinics or youth programs
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A practice plan for the lanes with a target for the next session
- A spare clinic for bowlers who miss the same spares
- A ball fitting session for bowlers with a new ball or a new hand fit
- A recheck before a league season or a tournament
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach bowling. Keep any coaching certification current, complete a background check if you work with children, carry liability insurance if the center requires it, and check with your state or local licensing agency for rules that apply to the center where you teach.
Questions
Do I need liability insurance to coach at a center?
Many bowling centers ask coaches to carry liability insurance before they teach there. Check the center's rules and keep your certificate on your profile.
How do I handle a bowler who wants to change everything at once?
Show them the one change that will make the biggest difference first, and let them repeat it until it holds. Changing the whole approach at once usually makes the scores worse before they get better.
