Kosher catering: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What kosher catering is

A kosher caterer prepares food following kosher dietary laws, under supervision where required, for weddings and events. Families and congregations hire one when the guests expect a kosher menu and the event needs a caterer who knows the rules and can show how they are kept.

Signs you need it

  • Your guests keep kosher and expect the food and the service to follow kosher rules
  • You are planning a wedding or a community event that requires kosher supervision
  • The venue has no kosher kitchen and you need a caterer who can bring a kosher setup
  • You want to know which items are kosher and which have supervision on the label
  • You want the separation of meat and dairy kept clear throughout the event

What the pro does

  • Talks with you about the kosher standards your guests expect and the supervision needed
  • Plans a menu that fits the rules for meat, dairy and parve dishes
  • Sources ingredients and checks the supervision status of each item
  • Prepares the food in a kitchen that follows the agreed standards
  • Sets up the serving area with separate utensils and clear labels
  • Shares the supervision documents and any certificate with you

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Guest count and the number of dishes on the menu
  • Supervision required and the certifying body's requirements
  • Whether the caterer must use a separate kitchen or cook off site
  • Service style, such as buffet, family style or plated
  • Staffing for service, supervision on site and cleanup
  • Special items, such as kosher wine or specialty baked goods

What a written quote should spell out

  • The menu with each dish and its kosher status
  • Supervision included and who is responsible for it on the day
  • Separate utensils and serving areas for meat and dairy
  • Service style and the number of servers
  • Equipment included and the setup, service and cleanup times

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Which supervising organization certifies your kitchen and this event?
  • Can you show me the current certificate and its date?
  • How do you keep meat and dairy separate in cooking, storage and serving?
  • Who on site will be responsible for the supervision during the event?
  • What happens if an item arrives without the supervision mark?
  • Do you hold a health permit, and where is the food prepared?

Red flags

  • Cannot name the supervising organization or show a current certificate
  • Mixes meat and dairy items in the same serving area
  • Will not explain how the supervision is kept on the day
  • Claims kosher status without documents
  • Serves non kosher items beside the kosher menu without a plan for separation

What you can do yourself

A host can plan a simple kosher menu at home by buying items that carry a supervision mark and keeping meat and dairy separate, using clear labels. Hire a kosher caterer when the event needs supervision, a full menu, a separate kitchen or serving area, or a level of kosher care that you cannot check yourself.

Licenses and permits

Food businesses commonly need a health permit or a food handler card from the local office that oversees food safety. Kosher supervision is provided by a separate supervising organization, so ask the caterer which one it works with and request the certificate for your event in writing.

Kosher catering questions

Can a caterer be kosher without supervision?

Standards vary. Ask the caterer what supervision it uses and whether the guests require it. Confirm the requirement with the people who will eat the food.

Who checks the kosher status on the day?

Ask the caterer and the supervising organization. Some events have a supervisor on site, and the caterer should name that person in writing.

Can we bring in outside food at a kosher event?

Only if the supervising organization approves it. Ask the caterer before you bring any food into the venue.
