Halal catering: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What halal catering is
A halal caterer prepares food in line with halal practices, sourcing permitted ingredients and avoiding prohibited items for your event. Families and groups hire one for weddings, community events and gatherings where guests expect the food to meet halal requirements.
Signs you need it
- Your guests expect the food to follow halal practices, and you want a caterer who understands them
- You are planning a wedding or community event where the menu must meet those practices
- You need meat that is sourced and handled according to halal practices
- You want the kitchen, the utensils and the service kept separate from non halal food
- You want a clear answer to the questions your guests will ask about the food
What the pro does
- Talks with you about the halal practices your guests expect and the menu you want
- Sources permitted ingredients and confirms the origin of the meat
- Keeps halal food separate from non halal food in storage, cooking and serving
- Prepares the menu in a kitchen that follows the practices agreed with you
- Serves the food with clean utensils and clear labels for each dish
- Shares any certificate or documentation of the sourcing with you on request
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Guest count and the number of dishes on the menu
- Meat type and the sourcing it requires
- Whether the caterer must use a separate kitchen or cooking area
- Service style, such as buffet, family style or plated
- Staffing for service and cleanup
- Any certification or documentation the event requires
What a written quote should spell out
- Each dish and its ingredients, with the meat source named
- Separate storage, cooking and serving steps for halal food
- Service style and the number of servers
- Equipment included and the setup, service and cleanup times
- Any certificate or documentation the caterer will provide
Questions to ask before you hire
- Where does the meat come from, and can you show the sourcing documents?
- How do you keep halal food separate from non halal food in the kitchen and at service?
- Is any certification in place, and which body issued it?
- Are the utensils and cookware used only for halal food?
- Can you explain the menu to my guests if they have questions?
- Do you hold a health permit, and where is the food prepared?
Red flags
- Cannot show where the meat is sourced or how it was handled
- Mixes halal and non halal food in the same storage or serving area
- Claims a certification without showing the documents
- Does not discuss the halal practices with you before quoting
- Will not label the ingredients on each dish
What you can do yourself
A host can prepare a halal menu at home with ingredients they buy from a source they trust, using separate cookware and clear labels. Hire a halal caterer when the event has many guests, when the meat must be sourced and handled to a standard you cannot check yourself, or when the food must be served in a separate area with its own utensils.
Licenses and permits
Food businesses commonly need a health permit or a food handler card from the local office that oversees food safety. Halal certification, where it is used, is usually issued by a separate certifying body, so ask the caterer which body it works with and request the certificate in writing.
Halal catering questions
How do I know the caterer's halal claims are true?
Ask for the sourcing documents and any certificate, and check the certificate's date and the certifying body. Ask to see the kitchen or a photo of the storage and cooking area.
Do the utensils need to be separate?
Ask the caterer to use separate utensils and cookware for halal food, and to keep the serving tools for each dish separate. Confirm this in the agreement.
Can the caterer serve a mixed event?
Yes, if the caterer keeps the halal food separate in storage, cooking and serving. Ask how the separation is done and who checks it on the day.
