Art installation: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What art installation is
An installer hangs and secures artwork, mirrors, shelving art or sculpture on walls and in rooms. The work includes checking the wall, choosing the right anchors and hanging the piece level and secure.
Signs you need it
- You have a large or heavy piece, such as a mirror or a framed painting, that needs secure hanging
- You have a gallery wall or a set of pieces that must be spaced and aligned
- You have a sculpture or art piece that needs a secure base or mount
- Your walls are plaster, brick, tile or another surface that is hard to hang on
- You want the work hung level and checked for safety before you use the room
What the pro does
- Walks through the room and asks where the art should go and how it will be viewed
- Checks the wall for studs, wiring, pipes and the type of surface
- Chooses the hardware, anchors and cable rated for the weight of the piece
- Marks the layout, checks it with you, and makes any changes before drilling
- Hangs or mounts the piece, checking that it is level, secure and at the right height
- Cleans up the area and explains how to check the hanging over time
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- The weight and size of each piece and the number of pieces to be hung
- The wall type, such as drywall, plaster, brick, tile or concrete
- Whether the installer needs a ladder, lift or other equipment
- Whether a gallery layout or a complex arrangement is included
- Whether the installer must patch holes or repaint the wall
- Whether sculpture bases, custom mounts or lighting are included
What a written quote should spell out
- The number of pieces, their weight and the wall type
- Whether hardware, anchors and cable are included
- Whether layout planning and a level check are included
- Whether wall patching or painting is included
- The arrival time and whether the installer will clean up after the job
Questions to ask before you hire
- What hardware and anchors will you use for this wall and this weight?
- Will you check for wiring and pipes before drilling?
- Can you show me how you plan the layout before we drill?
- Do you carry insurance for work in my home?
- Will you patch the holes when the piece comes down?
- How do you hang a sculpture or heavy mirror safely?
- Can you show me how to check the hanging after you leave?
Red flags
- Drills into a wall without checking for wiring, pipes or the wall type
- Uses the wrong anchors for the weight of the piece
- Will not discuss the layout before drilling
- Does not have a plan for heavy or fragile pieces
- Leaves the piece hanging without a level check
What you can do yourself
You can hang a light framed piece on a stud or a rated picture hook, using a level. Hire an installer for heavy mirrors, large sculpture, gallery walls, plaster or brick walls, and any piece where a fall could cause injury or damage. If you find wiring or a pipe in the wall, stop and call a licensed electrician or plumber first.
Licenses and permits
A license is often not required to hang artwork, but rules differ by state and city. Ask for proof of installation experience and photos of installed pieces, and confirm liability insurance for work in your home.
Art installation questions
How do I know the wall can hold the piece?
The installer checks the wall type and the weight of the piece, then chooses anchors rated for that load. For heavy pieces, they may find a stud or use a bracket that spreads the weight.
Can you hang art on a plaster wall?
Yes, with the right anchors and a careful drill plan. Ask the installer how they will avoid cracking the plaster and how they will repair any small damage.
Will the installer patch the holes after I remove the art?
Ask before the job. Some installers patch and touch up paint, and others do not. Put the patching terms in the quote so you know what to expect.
