Startup consulting: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering startup consulting

You guide early stage founders through idea testing, business model work, pitching and early planning. Your job is to help founders make decisions with evidence, not to tell them what the answer is.

What customers ask

  • How do I know whether customers actually want this?
  • Can you help me build a pitch that investors will take seriously?
  • What should my first few hires be?
  • Do you take equity, and what do you expect in return?
  • Can you review my financial model and tell me what is missing?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask what the founder has tested so far, what they believe about customers and which decision is due, then write those down.
  • Propose a short test plan with one assumption per test, the method, the result that would change the plan and the date.
  • Show a sample business model map or pitch review from a similar early stage company, with names removed.
  • Put the session agenda, the materials you will deliver and any equity or fee terms in a written agreement before work begins.
  • Give homework after each session with a clear deliverable, such as a set of customer conversation notes.
  • Send a one page summary of decisions made in each session within a day.

What to put on your profile

  • List the stages you work with, from idea to early revenue, so founders can see the fit.
  • Describe your method in plain steps, such as assumption testing, pitch review and hiring planning.
  • Name the industries you know well and the kinds of companies you have not worked with.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Check in after the first test results to decide whether the plan should change.
  • Offer a pitch review ahead of a specific meeting the founder has scheduled.
  • Suggest a review of hiring needs when the business reaches its next milestone.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required for startup consulting. If you give legal, tax or securities advice, confirm that you hold the license that work requires in your state, and refer founders to a licensed professional for any part you cannot cover.

Questions

Can I advise on fundraising?

You can help with the pitch and the planning. Advice on securities or raising capital may require a license, so check your state rules and refer founders to a licensed professional where needed.

How do I handle a founder who wants me to confirm their idea?

Explain that your job is to test the idea, which may show it is weaker than they believe. Put the test plan in writing so the decision rests on evidence.

Should I take equity?

That is your choice and the founder's. Write down the terms, the work you will do and how conflicts of interest will be handled before you agree to anything.
