Market research: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering market research
You gather and analyze information about clients' customers, competitors and demand, then report findings that guide decisions. Your value is research that answers the real question and reports honest limits.
What customers ask
- What exactly will you find out for me?
- How many people will you talk to?
- Can you tell me what my customers want to buy?
- How long will the research take, and what will it cost?
- Can you give me a clear answer, not just data?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the decision the research will support, the questions the client needs answered, the customers to reach and the deadline, then confirm them in writing.
- Write the questions before the method, and test the survey or interview guide with two or three people before it goes out.
- Use neutral wording and random or defined sampling, and state the sample method in the report.
- Send the client a plan with the method, the sample size and the limits before fieldwork begins.
- Report the findings with the method, the sample, the main results and the recommendations, and separate what the data shows from what it suggests.
- Store the raw data securely, remove personal details from the report and delete the data when the agreement says so.
What to put on your profile
- List the research types you run, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups and data analysis.
- Describe your method and sampling approach in plain steps.
- Post sample report pages with client details removed.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a follow up study to test the recommendation after the client acts on it.
- Suggest a quarterly customer pulse survey, using the same questions each time.
- Recommend a review of the research findings with the client's team, to agree on the action.
Licenses and permits
Market research is usually not licensed. Keep your business registration current; surveys and data collection are subject to privacy and consent rules that apply where participants live, so check those rules before you collect any personal data.
Questions
Do I need a certification to do market research?
Usually not. Clients look for a clear method, examples of past reports and references. Some professional groups offer certifications you can list if you hold them.
What if the results do not support the client's plan?
Report the results clearly and explain what they mean for the decision. Do not change the findings to fit the plan, and note the limits of the study.
How do I handle personal data from participants?
Collect only what the research needs, store it securely, remove identifiers from the report and follow the consent and deletion rules that apply.
