Garage organizing: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering garage organizing
Garage organizing is judged on whether the vehicle fits and whether the client can grab a tool without searching. Winning it means measuring the space, mounting safely and a layout the client signs off on before you drill.
What customers ask
- Will the car fit after you finish
- What shelves and racks do you use
- Can you mount things on my concrete block or drywall
- Do you store the chemicals and fuel safely
- Can you install a ceiling rack
- Will you haul the discards away
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the garage size, the vehicle dimensions and the list of items to store, then confirm the zones in writing
- Measure the bays, the door clearance and the wall types, and sketch the layout for the client to approve before you mount hardware
- Show the hardware rating and the mounting method for each wall type in the quote
- Quote racks, shelves, bins and labels as separate lines, so the client can pick what they want
- Set a chemical and fuel storage plan in writing, and tell the client what you will not store
- Leave the garage with the vehicle space clear and a short sheet showing where each zone is
What to put on your profile
- Before and after photos of a garage with a cleared floor, wall racks and labeled bins
- A list of garage systems you install, such as wall racks, overhead storage and shelving
- Your mounting hardware list for concrete block, drywall and masonry
- Your insurance certificate and a note on your process for storing chemicals safely
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a seasonal swap of gear and decor, quoted as a short visit
- Suggest a check of the racks and shelves after a few months of use, to tighten anything that has loosened
- Share a short labeling system the client can keep up with on their own
Licenses and permits
Garage organizing is not commonly licensed. Overhead and structural mounting may fall under general construction rules in some areas, so check with your state or local licensing agency before doing that work, and keep your insurance certificate current.
Questions
Should I install a ceiling rack?
Only after you check the joists and the rating of the rack. If the framing is not clear, refer the job or ask a qualified person to confirm before you mount anything overhead.
How do I handle chemicals that the client wants stored with the tools?
Keep them at a height and in a container the label allows, and never store fuel near a water heater or gas appliance. Say in writing what you will and will not store.
