Window cleaning: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering window cleaning

Window cleaning is judged on clear glass, clean tracks and a safe approach to upper floors. Winning it means a clear access plan, a squeegee technique that leaves no streaks and an honest note on any failed seal or cracked pane.

What customers ask

  • Do you clean the upper floor windows
  • Will you clean the screens and tracks
  • Can you get the hard water spots off
  • Will you damage the glass coating
  • Is it safe to work on a ladder at my home
  • Do you tell me about a cracked pane or a failed seal

How to win the job

  • On the walkthrough, count the panes, note the story height and check how the outside is reached, then quote by pane and access
  • Quote glass, screens, tracks and sills as separate lines so the customer can choose which to include
  • Use a squeegee and a clean blade for each pass, and wipe the frame edges so the streaks do not show
  • Name the cleaning solution and say whether it is safe on tinted or coated glass
  • Photograph any cracked pane or failed seal and report it in writing before you leave
  • Send a photo of the windows after the clean, and leave the tracks and sills dry

What to put on your profile

  • Before and after photos of an upper floor window and a glass door, from the same angle
  • A list of window services you offer, such as interior glass, exterior glass, screens and tracks
  • Your access equipment, such as a water-fed pole system or ladder, and how you use it safely
  • Your insurance certificate and your fall protection process for work above ground level

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a seasonal clean of the exterior glass and screens, timed for pollen or storm seasons
  • Suggest a check of the seals and tracks once a year, with a note of anything that needs a repair
  • Share a short care note on cleaning tracks and screens between professional visits

Licenses and permits

Window cleaning is not commonly licensed. Check with your state or local licensing agency for business registration you need, and confirm the safety rules that apply to ladder and lift work where you operate, keeping your insurance certificate current.

Questions

Should I clean windows on a steep roof or above a porch?

Only with safe access and the right equipment. If the access is not safe, tell the customer and offer the windows you can reach safely.

What if I see a broken seal or a cracked pane?

Photograph it and report it in writing. Glass repair and replacement should go to a qualified glazier, and you should not promise a fix you cannot do.
