Face painting: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering face painting
You offer face painting for birthday parties, schools, fairs and festivals. This guide covers what customers ask, how to win the booking and what to show on your profile.
What customers ask
- What paints do you use, and are they safe for kids?
- How many guests can you paint in an hour?
- Do you do full-face designs, and what is on your menu?
- What space and setup do you need?
- Can I see photos of your designs?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask about the number of guests, the ages, the time you will work and the theme before you talk about the booking
- Send photos of your menu and a sample of a finished design, labeled with the design name and time it takes
- Put the paint brand, the design menu, the work time and the setup needs in the written quote
- Share a sample menu by age group, with quick designs for young kids and detailed designs for older kids
- Confirm the setup space, the chairs, the mirror and the shade with the host before the event
- Ask the host to tell you about any allergies or skin sensitivities before the event
- Say how you handle a line that runs past the booked time, and who covers if you are ill, in the written booking
What to put on your profile
- Photos of finished designs, grouped by menu category
- Photos of your station setup with the paints visible
- A list of the paint brands you use and the skin-safety checks you run
- Your insurance status and the event types where you have worked
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a theme menu for the party so the design choices match the event
- Suggest a quick design option for the end of the party when the line gets long
- Recommend a simple shade or indoor spot for the station if the event is outdoors
Licenses and permits
No state license is usually required for face painting. Carry general liability insurance, any local business license that applies and the paint product labels for each brand you use, and check state and local requirements with your licensing agency and the site's vendor rules before taking jobs.
Questions
Do I need a permit to work at a school or fair?
Often the site has its own vendor rules. Ask the site what applies and confirm the answer in writing before the event.
How do I handle a child who has a reaction to the paint?
Stop painting that area right away, clean the skin gently and let the parent know. Keep the product label and any information about the paint ready for the family.
How do I keep the line moving?
Use a simple menu for quick designs and agree on a time per child with the host. Ask a helper to manage the line if the crowd is large.
