Advertising: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering advertising

You plan, create and place ads across channels for clients, setting the audience, message and schedule for each campaign. Your value is a coordinated campaign, clear placement choices and honest reports on what each channel did.

What customers ask

  • Which channel will get me the most customers?
  • Can you make the ads and place them?
  • How do you choose who sees the ads?
  • What will the campaign cost me, including media?
  • How will I know the ads worked?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask for the goals, the audience, the budget limits, the timing, the channels and the approval contact, then confirm them in writing.
  • Show a media plan with the channels, the audience, the schedule and the reason for each choice, before buying any space.
  • Create the ad concepts and let the client choose one before the full set of sizes is made.
  • Check each ad's claims against the client's approved proof, and keep the approval on file.
  • Set up tracking for each channel, such as a unique phone number or link, so the results can be separated.
  • Report reach, response and cost by channel each week, and recommend changes based on that data.

What to put on your profile

  • List the channels you plan and place ads on, such as online, print, radio and outdoor.
  • Describe your planning and measurement method in plain steps.
  • Post examples of campaigns with client permission, showing the goal and the channels used.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a review of the campaign at its end, with the results and the lessons for the next one.
  • Suggest a seasonal campaign plan that uses the same creative in new formats.
  • Recommend a test of one new channel once the current channels are measured.

Licenses and permits

Advertising is usually not licensed. Keep your business registration current; advertising for regulated products and services, such as financial, health or alcohol, must follow rules set by government agencies, so check the rules for each client's product before you place the ads.

Questions

Do I need a license to run ads for clients?

Usually not for general advertising. Check your state or local rules if you operate as a registered business, and check the rules for any regulated product you advertise.

What if a client wants a claim that cannot be supported?

Decline the claim in writing and explain the risk. Offer wording the client can support, and keep the client's decision on file.

How do I handle a client who wants the campaign to run without review?

Refuse. Put a written approval step in the agreement for every ad, and do not place any ad that has not been approved.
